In brief

Published national figures put a typical well pump repair at $300 to $600, a pressure tank replacement at $800 to $1,500 and a submersible pump replacement at $1,000 to $2,500, installed.[1][2][3] Running the pump is the cheap part: a few dollars a month of electricity for a typical household. The guides below break each number down and say what was and wasn't included.

Three questions that decide your bill

Has the fault actually been found?
A pressure tank, a switch, a control box and a check valve can each produce symptoms that look like a failing pump, at a fraction of the cost. Work through troubleshooting before pricing anything, and ask any contractor what was measured.
Does the pump have to come out of the well?
Above-ground repairs are billed mostly for the part. In-well repairs add a crew and pulling time — HomeGuide lists a two-person well crew at $150 to $300 an hour.[1] See why pulling the pump costs more.
What else is being replaced?
Pipe, wire, tank, switch and valves are often renewed during a pump job. Each is a line item; ask for them separately. The quote checklist lists what to request.

How we handle cost data

  • We publish no prices of our own. We are not contractors and run no price survey. Every figure is attributed to the publisher that produced it, with its date.
  • We cite only what we have read directly. Widely repeated figures we could not open and read ourselves are left out.
  • We don't fill gaps. Where no reliable national figure exists — a per-foot price for deep wells, a drop-pipe repair — we say so instead of estimating.
  • Ranges are national. Local labor rates, access and well depth move real quotes outside them. Use the ranges to question a quote, not to predict one.
